How central is Café-Hotel Appenzell?

It could hardly be more central: Café-Hotel Appenzell is located directly on the historic Landsgemeindeplatz, right in the heart of Appenzell. Shops, sights, restaurants and the railway station are all within easy walking distance.

How far is the hotel from Appenzell railway station?

Appenzell railway station is only about a five-minute walk from the hotel. This makes us easy to reach by public transport and gives you convenient access to many excursions by train and bus.

Are there free parking spaces at the hotel?

Yes. Free parking spaces are available for our hotel guests directly behind the hotel. Parking spaces cannot be reserved in advance.

Are there charging stations for electric cars?

Yes. Charging stations for electric vehicles are available directly at the hotel, allowing you to charge your car conveniently during your stay.

How many rooms does Café-Hotel Appenzell have?

Our 3-star superior hotel has a total of 16 rooms with 32 beds: 12 double rooms, 2 single rooms, 1 junior suite and 1 twin room.

What room categories are available?

You can choose between double rooms, single rooms, a twin room with separate beds and our spacious junior suite.

Which rooms are suitable for families?

We offer different options for families depending on the number of guests. Our spacious junior suite, with an additional sofa bed, is particularly suitable for families. We will be happy to advise you personally on the best room arrangement for your family.

Can you provide a baby cot or extra bed?

Yes. A baby cot is provided free of charge. An extra bed measuring 180 × 90 cm costs CHF 50.– per child per night. Our sofa bed measuring 180 × 140 cm costs CHF 100.– per person per night. We recommend requesting additional sleeping arrangements when making your reservation.

Are dogs allowed in the hotel?

If you are travelling with your dog, please contact us before your arrival. We will be happy to discuss the available options with you. Please note that dogs are not permitted in our Dr Hildebrand Stube.

Is the hotel accessible and is there a lift?

Our hotel rooms are easily accessible by lift. We also have a wheelchair-accessible twin room with two separate beds. If you have specific accessibility requirements, we recommend contacting us before booking.

Arrival, Check-in & Check-out

From what time is check-in possible and when is check-out?

Your room is available from 2.00 pm on the day of arrival. On the day of departure, we kindly ask you to vacate your room by 11.00 am. Earlier check-in or later check-out may be possible depending on availability.

Can I leave my luggage before check-in or after check-out?

Yes, of course. You are welcome to leave your luggage with us and enjoy Appenzell before check-in or after check-out.

Can I arrive late in the evening?

Yes. Late arrival is possible by prior arrangement using our self check-in option. Please let us know in good time so that we can prepare everything for you.

Breakfast & Restaurant

Is breakfast included in the room rate?

This depends on the rate you have booked. Whether breakfast is included is shown during the booking process and in your booking confirmation.

Can non-hotel guests have breakfast at the hotel?

Absolutely. Our breakfast is not only available to hotel guests. External guests are also very welcome to enjoy breakfast with us. We recommend booking a table in advance.

What are the breakfast times?

Breakfast is served daily from 7.30 am to 10.00 am.

What can I expect at breakfast?

Enjoy a carefully prepared breakfast buffet with fresh bread and pastries, jams, fruit juices, homemade Bircher muesli, smoked salmon and selected regional meat and cheese specialities. Coffee specialities and freshly prepared egg dishes can be ordered directly from our service team.

Does the hotel have its own restaurant?

Yes. Our hotel includes a public café-restaurant directly on Landsgemeindeplatz. Both hotel guests and external visitors are very welcome.

What kind of cuisine does the restaurant serve?

Our kitchen combines regional and seasonal dishes with Appenzell specialities and popular classics. We place great importance on fresh ingredients, seasonal products and careful preparation.

Do I need to reserve a table in the restaurant?

A reservation is not mandatory, but it is recommended during popular dining times. This allows us to ensure that a suitable table is available for you. For same-day reservations, we recommend calling us directly.

Do you offer vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free dishes?

Vegetarian dishes are regularly available on our menu. For gluten-free, lactose-free, vegan or other special dietary requirements, we recommend letting us know before your visit. We will be happy to tell you what options are currently available.

Is there a terrace?

Yes. In fine weather, you can enjoy food and drinks on our garden terrace right in the heart of Appenzell while watching village life go by.

Celebrations, Groups & Special Occasions

Can I organise a family celebration, birthday or other event at your hotel?

Absolutely. Our historic Dr Hildebrand Stube provides a special setting for birthdays, family celebrations, weddings, baptisms, First Communions, corporate events, funeral receptions and many other occasions. We will also be happy to assist you with menu planning.

How many people can the Dr Hildebrand Stube accommodate?

Our Dr Hildebrand Stube can accommodate groups of up to 24 people. We offer individual menu suggestions for groups and will be happy to assist you personally with the planning of your event.

Appenzell Holiday Card & Excursions

What is the Appenzell Holiday Card and when do I receive it?

Guests staying with us for at least three consecutive nights receive the Appenzell Holiday Card free of charge. It includes numerous complimentary services in the region, such as public transport, selected mountain railways, museums and, depending on the season, additional leisure activities. You will receive the card digitally before your arrival.

Which excursion destinations are particularly easy to reach from the hotel?

Thanks to our central location, many of the highlights of the Appenzellerland region are easy to reach. Popular destinations include Ebenalp with Wildkirchli and Aescher, Seealpsee, Kronberg, Hoher Kasten and Säntis. Appenzell’s historic village centre, museums and numerous walking and hiking routes are also right on our doorstep.

How do I get from the hotel to Ebenalp, Seealpsee or Säntis?

For Ebenalp and Seealpsee, the easiest option is to take the Appenzeller Bahnen train from Appenzell to Wasserauen. The Ebenalp cable car valley station is only a short walk from Wasserauen railway station. The hiking trail to Seealpsee also starts in Wasserauen.

For an excursion to Säntis, travel via Urnäsch to Schwägalp and continue from there by the Säntis aerial cableway to the summit. We will be happy to help you plan your route at reception.

Which hikes can I start directly from the hotel?

There are numerous walks and hiking routes around Appenzell that can be started directly from the hotel. For excursions further into the Alpstein area, Wasserauen, Weissbad and other starting points can easily be reached with the Appenzeller Bahnen. We will be happy to recommend a suitable route depending on the weather, your fitness level and the time available.

What can I do in Appenzell when the weather is bad?

There is plenty to discover in Appenzell even on rainy days. You can visit Museum Appenzell, the art museum or the Kunsthalle, explore the historic village centre, go shopping or enjoy Appenzell specialities. Guided tours and other indoor activities are also regularly available in the region.

What activities do you recommend for families with children?

The Appenzellerland region offers many family-friendly activities, including easy walks, mountain railway excursions, Seealpsee, Kronberg and a wide range of outdoor experiences. From three overnight stays, the Appenzell Holiday Card also includes numerous leisure activities free of charge.

What winter sports are available nearby?

In winter, the Appenzellerland region offers opportunities for skiing, cross-country skiing, winter hiking and ice skating. Which areas and facilities are open depends on current snow and weather conditions. We will be happy to provide up-to-date recommendations during your stay.

Can I rent a bicycle or e-bike?

Yes. There are several bicycle and e-bike rental providers in Appenzell and the surrounding area. Depending on the season, guests staying at least three nights can also benefit from free bicycle rental with the Appenzell Holiday Card against a deposit. Availability cannot be guaranteed.

Can I store my bicycle or e-bike securely at the hotel?

Yes. Although we do not have a dedicated bicycle room, bicycles and e-bikes can be stored securely in our cellar if required. Simply speak to us when you arrive.

Is there a drying room for wet hiking or ski equipment?

We do not have a dedicated drying room. However, if required, wet clothing or equipment can be hung near our heating to dry. Just ask us and we will be happy to find a practical solution.

Can I cancel or change my booking free of charge?

Cancellation and amendment conditions depend on the rate or offer you have booked. The conditions applicable to your reservation can be found in your booking confirmation. If you would like to make a change, please contact us directly and we will be happy to check the available options.

Which payment methods do you accept?

You can pay in cash as well as by common payment cards and other standard payment methods.

When is Café-Hotel Appenzell closed or on annual holiday?

Our current opening hours and announced annual holiday periods can always be found on our website. As these dates may change from year to year, we recommend checking the latest information before your visit.

Is the restaurant also closed during the hotel’s annual holiday?

Yes. During our annual holiday period, Café-Hotel Appenzell, including the restaurant, is closed. The current dates are published on our website.
